The good and the bad of Hillcrest

Friday, June 8th, 2007

The good is in the foreground - they have a local program where artists paint the telephone and power utility boxes. It’s really cool, fun to look at and seems to keep them graffiti-free.

In the background, the gasoline prices as of 6/7/07.

Then again, I was walking home from my UCSD shuttle, so it’s not personally a large expense.

The juxtaposition of the two literally stopped me in my tracks to dig for the camera on the way home.

Macro shooting on the cheap

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Via Lifehacker, I built myself a ten-dollar lightbox for macro photography. Here’s the first result, as posted to SCWF:

And another:

This is two Ikea halogens as a first try. I think a bit more work (lining the box with white fabric to increase light, adding more lights, white paper reflector as shown in their example, maybe try it in daylight) will yield some decent results. I need to do shoots for for watch reviews, and this is a cheap way to do it.

Recommended!

Update 6/7/07: If you want to see the real deal, check out SteveG’s macro setup. OMFG. He gets the results, too.

Nostalgia for the old pad

The old computer room

One advantage of the old house was room to hack - here’s my previous configuration. You can see the server, switches, my desktop PC, network printer, tools, power, audio gear, parts, a whiteboard and my electronics bench on the right. Now, I have one of the racks, and all else is in the garage.

Not visible are the rest of the room, equally large, with my telecommute desk, window and bookcases.

Sniff.

Ahh well, the weather is better here, even if real estate is, well, unreal.

From the new firewall’s syslog:

Wed Jun 6 17:26:05 2007
RGFW-IN: BLOCK-SYNFLOOD (TCP 76.171.170.53:34556->204.128.136.1:80 on ixp1) [200,0]
Wed Jun 6 17:19:22 2007
SYSLOG_NK-(System Log)Mail sending to [redacted] successfully !

Seems like the box think’s there’s a SYN flood attack, which is a particular type of denial of service.

False alarm? Occurring all along and just now visible? Can’t tell. Does make me wonder if my old OpenBSD pf rules were also working on these. pf is amazing for firewalls.

(The IP points to a host on the Road Runner cable modem network, I assume its a pwned Windows box.

A keen music video

Via VSL, a pointer to a cool music video, done with dice as pxels. Check out a screenshot above, and then check it out. Note that the actual QuickTime file is at this URL if you want to download it. Kind of a catchy tune.

Hoisted from the archive, Diego helming the 172 in May of 2003. Good times. Dupage airfield and surrounding area on a nice summer day. Enjoy!

There are perks sometimes. As obvious as this sculpture is, it’s quite pleasant to look at and visiting kids love it on sight.

Cleanliness is far away from MRSA

However, the results of a double-blinded, randomized clinical trial comparing the short- and long-term effects of hand washing with plain or antimicrobial soap over the course of a year argue in favor of targeted rather than ubiquitous general household use of antimicrobial soap.

Long article on the best way to stay healthy. Unsurprisingly, it’s simply washing your hands, and skip the anti-microbial soap. Yer mom was right.

Best VNC client for OSX?

Monday, June 4th, 2007

…Via this ADC thread, news of the spiffy VNCThing, a rather nice client. Homepage seems to be lost-domained, but the software seems to work pretty well. I guess it’s greedy of me to wish that CoRD would add VNC support…
